Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton

It's 768 pages (big!) in the hardcover version, and just published in March, 2004. It starts out as a space opera, sweeping scope, tieing in a crime whodunit with alien invasion. Hamilton is becoming one of my favorite sci-fi authors.
