First Anniversary of Drew's Blog

Today is the first anniversary of this blog.

Some of the things I've learned:
1) I can't write something every day, but I have enough good ideas to write something every couple of days, if I can make the time

2) Blogs are more fun with links and pictures

This is a picture of my sister Kira with my nephew Mason (my brother Rick's youngest boy). Aaron, Kira and I went to Splashtown last year with Rick, Claire and the three boys, Callum, Braden, and Mason.

3) Blogger is the greatest. You should use it too. It's free and very easy.

4) Never post about your undefeated fantasy football team. You will immediately lose the next three in a row. Also, never post about your local baseball team being one game away from their first World Series appearance. They'll lose the next two. I'm not superstitious, but it's only prudent.

5) More people will read it than you think. I have been really pleased with how many people have told me that they read the blog to keep up with what's going on in my life. Thanks. I'm going to turn on the comments feature for this post, I'd like to see how it works.

6) People you really didn't think would read your blog will read it. Several guys from work mentioned that they've seen it, so I have to be careful. Er, not that there's anything to hide! It's funny, a guy took my "Helmetcam" picture to use in a flyer for one of the presentations I made. I definitely need to rewrite my Work page.

7) There's lots of cool blogs out there, and I'm experimenting with news accumulators (they go out and collect the latest posts and put them in one place). As soon as I learn a little more, I'll post a how-to.

So, while I intended this to be a daily diary of sorts, it's ended up more like a collection of occasional thoughts. Which is fine. I am writing more, and that's the whole purpose.

Go Astros!

The Houston Astros have a chance to go to the World Series for the first time, if they can win one of the next two from the Cardinals. Pete Monroe is pitching today, and Roger Clemens will pitch game 1 of the World series, or the seventh game of the NLCS (if necessary).

I'm suspending my usual pessimism and I'm going to say that I think that they can do it.

Latest scam

I got an update from Leslie, be very careful!

Subject: Latest scam...
Importance: High

I hate when people forward these warnings as much as anyone, but this one is important!

If someone comes to your front door saying they are conducting a survey on deer ticks and asks you to take your clothes off and dance around, do not do it! IT IS A SCAM; they only want to see you naked.

I wish I'd gotten this yesterday. I feel so stupid now...

You have to take these warnings with a grain of salt, because a lot of them are just spam. You have to check them out, for example, Hoaxbusters or snopes.com. They even have a cool What's New section.

Einstein, Picasso: Space, Time, and the Beauty That Causes Havoc by Arthur I. Miller

This book is an intriguing parallel between the revolutionary art of Pablo Picasso and the revolutionary science of Albert Einstein. There are more common in their creative geniuses that you would initially think. The reactions to their upheavals of the traditional, accepted doctrines, common culteral influences, and their solitary, initially unappreciated labors are just a few. The book has 368 pages, and was published in March 2002.

Moving Day

Today we moved our offices back into the downtown building. We packed our stuff on Friday, and worked at home yesterday while the movers moved everything. The offices are much nicer (I'll post a picture when I get everything unpacked) but the commute is slightly longer for me. Since the company stopped paying for my parking, I'll be a mass transit commuter. Today I rode the Metro Park and Ride:

Tomorrow I'm going to ride light rail:

Thursday I'm going to try the city bus.

City Bus

At least I won't have to deal with Houston traffic.
