books

Books are my biggest vice. I love to read, I never go anywhere without a book. I recently limited myself to two books per trip out of town, to reduce my load, and I finished both books by the third day of a week-long trip. When I travel, I usually am on my own for dinner, so I bring a book to the restaurant. I bring one with me to work in case I take lunch at an odd hour and there isn't anyone to go with me. I read an hour or so before going to sleep every night.

Growing up, we lived in Belgium from 1969 to 1974, age 5 to 10 for me. The television stations (both of them!) were government owned, and there was no television until 6 pm. I read instead of watching television.

I have thousands of books in my library at home, some day I'll catalog them and put them on this site. I read on a lot of different subjects, both fiction and nonfiction. I probably read more fiction on my own, and the book club tends to lean towards nonfiction.

houston book club

There are six of us in the Houston Book Club. It was formed in 1989, although none of the founding members are still involved, our most senior member joined in 1991. I joined in 2001. We select a topic (like Native American fiction), and then each month, one member selects a book that we all read. The selector hosts a dinner and we discuss the book. See the site for a list of all the books we've read.

my amazon wish list

For a list of books that looked interesting, take a look at my Amazon.com Wish List. This may not be representative of what I'm reading, since I usually bookmark a bunch of books and then buy only a few of them.
